A Quick Thought

Boys will be boys…

My son is currently in “the phase” where bodily noises and bodily functions are particularly interesting topics of conversation (and play) with him. As I was discussing with my wife last night, I explained to her that this “phase” won’t necessarily end quickly. Her expression compelled me to explain that this is an area that is particularly fascinating and entertaining to a substantial portion of the male population. Eddie Murphy and Mike Myers (to name a couple) have made significant careers by knowing (among other things) that certain jokes will make many of us laugh, and our wives cringe.

I don’t know why it is, but I do know that “boys will be boys.”

As a parent, I struggle with this one. I’ve heard that statement used to justify inappropriate behavior far too often. In general, I think it is my place as a parent to understand that some behaviors are inherent to kids in general. Boys will be boys and girls will be girls.

However, that doesn’t mean that I should validate inappropriate behavior by excusing it. When my son does something boyish and impolite, I’ll try to instruct him and teach him what is right. That’s about the only thing I can do. And it’s what I have to do.

Because —well— Boys will be boys, but they’ll soon grow into men.
